Together, we'll explore the intersection of nervous system science, mental health, spirituality, and healing.
The other day, I was doing one of my strength workouts at home. The instructor on the screen said, "If you can go up in weight, go ahead and grab the next set of dumbbells."
Without missing a beat, I answered the computer.
"No, I can't."
It wasn't a conscious decision. It just came out.
I didn't think, Maybe that's too heavy.
I didn't think, I'm not sure.
I thought, I can't.
Then something made me pause.
How did I know?
I hadn't picked up the heavier weights.
I hadn't even tried.
Somewhere along the way, my brain had already decided what was possible, and it presented that prediction to me as though it were a fact.
So I picked up the heavier weights.
To my surprise, I lifted them.
Not only could I do it, but I did it with good form. By the end of the workout, I increased the weight again.
Nothing about my muscles changed in those few minutes.
What changed was that I stopped treating my prediction as though it were reality.
Our nervous systems do this all the time.
"I can't have that conversation."
"They'll be upset if I say no."
"If my symptoms flare, something must be wrong."
"I'm not strong enough."
These predictions can feel so certain that we rarely stop to ask a simple question:
Have I actually tested this...or has my nervous system decided for me?
The challenge is that predictions become stronger when we never give ourselves the opportunity to gather new evidence.
Every time we avoid the conversation, skip the opportunity, or stay within the limits our predictions create, the nervous system quietly concludes, See? I was right.
But when we safely test a prediction, something remarkable can happen.
We discover that the prediction wasn't a fact after all.
It was simply our nervous system trying to protect us based on what it had learned before.
Healing often begins with these small moments of curiosity.
Not forcing ourselves into overwhelming situations.
Not proving ourselves wrong.
Simply asking:
"What if there's another possibility I haven't experienced yet?"
Because every new experience gives the nervous system an opportunity to update its prediction.
And that is how liberation begins.
This Week's Liberation Question:
What if the only thing standing between you and a new possibility is a prediction you've never tested?
60-Second Practice
Notice one prediction your mind offers you this week.
Before accepting it as fact, gently ask yourself:
"How do I know this is true?"
Then consider:
"Is there one small, safe way I could test this prediction?"
You don't need to leap.
You just need to become curious enough to discover whether your prediction is still serving you or whether your nervous system is ready to learn something new.
